Located approximately 700 miles west of the bustling metropolis of Buenos Aires, the province of Mendoza has produced wine since its early years as a Spanish colony.
This region's high desert weather, with its dry hot summers and cool winters produces well balanced, rich grapes, that yield particularly vibrant red wines and full flavored whites. Its rich soils are irrigated artificially, by an extensive network of canals and ditches, some of which predate the arrival of the Europeans, from the time when local indigenous people adopted some of the very advanced agricultural techniques deviced by the Incas.
Mendoza's silky smooth, tangy and plummy Malbecs have led many in Bordeaux to reconsider the potential of this long overlooked grape. In addition to Malbec, the region yields some outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon, Bonarda, Tempranillo, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc.
The influx of Spanish and Italian immigrants in the 19th Century, followed by the first railroad lines, ushered radical changes in the production of wine, ultimately leading to the development of one of the world's largest wine producing regions.
Today Argentina is the fifth largest producer of wine in the world. Seventy five percent of those wines come from Mendoza.
